The input offset of this signal path is low since gml (the first gain stage) is autozeroed. If the voltage gain of gml (combined with it's output resistance rol) is sufficiently high, then the offset voltages of gm3 and gm5 have little influence on the offset voltage of the complete amplifier. When the amplified signal is being held on C 3 and C 4 during phase 1, gm4 and gm5 provide an alternative path for the input signal to be amplified. gm3 maintains the low offset during phase 1, as long as the input signal does not move significantly.
By comparison, a single-ended implementation of gm2 will be far more sensitive to MOS switch leakage. If the total error introduced at the input of gm2 is V t" the input-referred offset of the autozeroed amplifier will change by: (9) Adding this error term to equation (8) gives the input-referred offset during phase 2 as: (10) Re-writing equation (10) will give a clearer picture of the trade-off between gml and gm2: (11) is the dominant contributor to V OSAZ if gml/gm2 is too large. V t, is the dominant contributor to V OSAZ if gml/gm2 is too small.

The absorption of analyte in a chemically sensitive polymer on the surface of the canti lever causes shifts in the resonance frequency. The second transducer is a planar capacitor with polymer-coated interdigitated electrodes to monitor changes of the polymer dielectric constant upon analyte absorption.
