The present Dutch natural gas reserves from all fields are estimated to total 1,765 billion cubic meters. Natural gas production in 1997 was about 84 billion cubic meters, around half of which is exported to Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, and Switzerland. 6 million tons of crude oil, or about 15% of its total domestic requirements (1995). From 1970 to 1994, Holland managed to reduce oil’s percentage of the country’s energy requirements from 58% to 36%. Much of the change is the result of substituting natural gas for oil, but successful efforts at energy conservation also contributed to reducing consumption.
